ISSUES

This election is an important one for West Brookfield. The Town will be getting a new Selectman for the first time in five years. And this is happening at a time when the Town is facing real challenges.

FINANCES

  • The fiscal pressures facing most cities and towns are catching up to West Brookfield.
  • This is happening at a time when some economists think we may be heading for worst recession since World War II.
  • West Brookfield is in relatively good shape to face these pressures – but will need help to remain financially strong.
  • With my background in municipal finance, I have ideas and solutions to protect the Town’s finances while maintaining Town – and School District – operations.
  • We need –
    • Reserve policies to set ceilings and floors for free cash and stabilization fund
    • A capital planning by-law that will maintain Town infrastructure in the most efficient way
    • Multi-year financial forecasting

TOWN SERVICES

  • Recent controversies in some Town departments have threatened public confidence in Town services.
  • We need to improve public confidence.
  • With my background in local government, I have ideas and solutions to help restore confidence.
  • I have proposed goal setting and performance evaluations for the department heads who report to the Selectmen.
  • This should be done in a careful and constructive way.
  • The focus should be on improving performance of Town departments rather than assigning blame for past problems.
